When Washington Nationals third baseman Ryan Zimmerman went 0-for-3 in a May 13 game in San Francisco, it marked the end of his 30-game hitting streak (longest in Major League Baseball so far this year). Appreciative Giants fans gave Zimmerman a standing ovation following his final plate appearance of the night.
The 24-year-old Zimmerman entered the current season in the best shape of his life after a strict offseason regimen, and is now batting .357 with eight homers and 26 RBIs this year.
Zimmerman’s bat hasn’t helped lift his team out of the National League East cellar. The Nats are 11-21, well behind the 18-15 New York Mets. There’s a tight race in the NL Central, with 21-14 Milwaukee holding a half-game lead over Chicago, Houston and St. Louis, who are all 20-14. Out West, the Los Angeles Dodgers are on top with a 24-14 mark, but will have to play 50 games without outfielder Manny Ramirez, who’s been suspended for performance enhancing drug use...just Manny being Manny, apparently.
