ROUEN WINS CHALLENGE DE FRANCE TOURNAMENT

The Rouen Huskies and Savigny Lions are 1-2 in the French Elite League standings thus far in 2009, and that’s how they finished in the 12-team Challenge de France tournament.

The two teams first crossed paths during first round pool play, with Rouen routing Savigny by a 15-1 score on May 22 in Montpellier. In Pool A play, the Senart Templiers went a perfect 3-0 to qualify for the final four, while the La Guerche Hawks came in second in the pool at 2-1.

The semifinals were held May 23, with Savigny eliminating Senart, 4-1, and Rouen tripling up on La Guerche, 6-2. The title game went to Rouen, who topped Savigny by a 7-5 count. By winning the Challenge de France, Rouen gets an automatic berth in next year’s European Cup. The other slot from the French Elite League will be filled by this year’s pennant winners.
