A.J. Burnett received a lot of headlines in the offseason when he signed a five-year, $82.5 million contract with the New York Yankees, but Toronto’s Roy Halladay showed why Burnett was the Number Two starter when both were with the Jays last year by tossing a complete-game 5-1 win over the Yanks on May 12 at the Rogers Centre in a matchup of former moundmates.
Halladay raised his record to 7-1 by scattering five New York hits with no walks, working his way through 17 consecutive batters without allowing a hit at one point. For his part, Burnett saw his record fall to 2-1 by letting in five runs on seven hits and four walks in 7.2 frames.
With the win, the Blue Jays held on to their American League East lead at 23-13, one game up on 21-13 Boston. Kansas City leads the AL Central at 18-16, just ahead of 17-16 Detroit and 18-17 Minnesota. Texas leads the West with a 20-14 record, while the Los Angeles Angels are 17-15.
