TAIWANESE RACE TIGHTENS: ONE GAME SEPARATES TOP 3 TEAMS

Two teams are in a virtual tie for first place in Taiwan’s Chinese Professional Baseball League, with a third club just one game behind the leaders.

The Sinon Bulls are 19-14-1 after pulling out a 5-3 win over the Uni-President Lions in Tienmu on May 16. Yu-jeh Shen came out of the bullpen to toss five innings of shutout ball for Sinon, who got 3-for-5 nights from Jien-ming Chang and Yi-chuan Lin at the plate. The Lions fell out of first place into third, and are now 18-15-1.

The La New Bears beat the Brother Elephants, 4-2, in front of a sellout crowd of nearly 20,000 fans in Kaohsiung County Stadium. The game featured a showdown between two former Major Leaguers. Brother pitcher Chin-hui Tsao struck out the Bears’ Chin-fong Chen in the fourth inning, but Chen got the last laugh with a sixth-inning homer. La New is 19-14-0, while Brother is now 11-24-0.
