Although this small island nation west of Italy isn’t a place one would expect Alexander Cartwright’s game to be played, Malta has had its own domestic baseball league since 1994. The 16th season of Maltese baseball came to a conclusion earlier this month, as the Mellieha Northenders won their fifth pennant in six years (and eighth overall) by defeating the Marsa Mustangs in their three-game final series. The Northenders won the third and deciding contest, 11-1, as first baseman Keith Bartolo homered and drove in four runs for the winners.
Mellieha pounded their way to a 12-0 record in the regular season. Marsa won the title series opener, 15-14, before Mellieha won the last two to cop the flag.
