VILLA CLARA REACHES CUBAN NATIONAL SERIES FINALS

One of two berths in this season’s Cuban National Series championship series has been taken. Villa Clara defeated Ciego de Avila, 2-1, last Monday night to take their Oriental Division final series by a 4 games to 1 margin. Villa Clara won the first three games of the series before Ciego de Avila put up an 8-2 win in Game 4 to stay alive. However, Villa Clara sealed the deal Monday when rookie Ramon Lunar whacked a walk-off homer in the bottom of the ninth.

The question remains as to who Villa Clara will square off against in the title set. La Habana leads Pinar del Rio in the Occidental Division finals, 3 games to 2, but unusual steady rainfall over the past week has been keeping that series from wrapping up. La Habana’s Ernesto Molinet’s three-run homer keyed a 6-1 win over Pinar del Rio on May 23, the last game played before the rains arrived.
