SANTIAGO EXITS CUBAN PLAYOFFS, FOUR TEAMS STILL PLAYING

Santiago de Cuba will not repeat as Cuban National Series champions this spring. Santiago’s hopes for a third straight pennant crashed when they were beaten by Villa Clara in their Oriental Division semifinal series.

Villa Clara now leads regular season champion Ciego de Avila, 2 games to 0, in the Oriental final series. Ariel Borrero homered in both games as Villa Clara took 8-0 and 8-3 wins. Game Two was tied 3-3 in the top of the eleventh before Villa Clara scored five times and held on for the victory.

La Habana and Pinar del Rio are tied at a game apiece in the Occidental Division finals. Pinar won the opener, 3-0, behind Rafael Vales’ two-run homer before La Habana won Game Two, 7-4.
