CPBL TEAM RELEASES RICO WASHINGTON

But what have you done for me lately?

The Taiwan Baseball blog reports that defending Chinese Professional Baseball League champion Uni-President Lions have released third baseman Rico Washington after the 30-year-old Milledgeville, Georgia native had made all of 86 plate appearances. Washington appeared to have been doing his job. He was hitting .297 for the Lions, while leading all third sackers in Taiwan in on-base percentage and slugging percentage. In the field, he was performing well enough to fill in effectively at shortstop when the need arose.

Although team officials mentioned Washington’s previous injuries as the reason for releasing him, those injuries didn’t prevent them from signing him in the offseason after hitting .254 with 13 homers for Memphis of the Class AAA Pacific Coast League prior to making his big league debut with the St. Louis Cardinals, where he hit .158 in 14 games.
