INDONESIA BEATS PAKISTAN IN ASIAN CUP FINAL

Eight national teams converged in Bangkok last week for the 2009 Asian Cup tournament. The teams were split up into two groups for round robin play in the first stage of competition, with the top two teams in each group advancing to the semifinal round.

Pakistan won the Group A title with a perfect 3-0 record, including a 9-4 upset over host Thailand. Sri Lanka also surpised the Thais, 3-1, on the opening day of competition, and went on to finish second in Group A at 2-1. Thailand was third at 1-2, and Malaysia was winless in three games.

Indonesia finished first in the Group B round-robin with three wins, and their 7-2 victory over Hong Kong on May 27 clinched a spot in the Cup final. Hong Kong was second at 2-1, Myanmar was third at 1-2 and Cambodia brought up the rear of Group B at 0-3.

In the crossover semifinals, Pakistan beat Hong Kong, 7-2, followed by Indonesia’s 7-4 win over Sri Lanka. Indonesia then took a come-from-behind win over Pakistan, 2-1, in the final by scoring twice in the eighth inning. Cambodia won their first-ever international tournament game with a resounding 20-8 consolation win over Malaysia (despite Cambodia 's Joe Cook having to manage the team via cell phone from Alabama because he couldn't make the trip to Bangkok), while Thailand shut out Myanmar, 5-0, in the other consolation game.
