Pinch-hitter Shinnosuke Abe drilled the first pitch he saw from Takehiko Oshimoto off the right field wall to drive in the winning run in the ninth inning April 22 as the Yomiuri Giants beat the Yakult Swallows, 2-1, in a Japanese Central League contest. The win was the sixth in a row for the Giants.
The game was a scoreless tie until the top of the fourth inning, when Yomiuri’s Yoshitomo Tani stroked an RBI double. Yakult knotted the score in the bottom of the eighth when Norichika Aoki socked a game-tying double, setting up Abe’s ninth-inning heroics for the Giants. Daisuke Ochi is now 2-0 after collecting the win in relief.
With the win, Yomiuri’s record went to 11-3-2 on the season, good for first place in the Central League standings. Yakult fell to 9-7 after losing their third game in a row, but still holds second place by one game over the 8-8 Chunichi Dragons.
