While La Habana still leads Cuba’s Occidental Division by five games, Pinar del Rio is making things interesting after winning eleven straight National Series games. Isla de la Juventud is in third place, seven games behind Pinar. The top four teams in each division qualify for playoffs.
In the Oriental Division, Ciego de Avila won nine of 12 games to pull six games ahead of Santiago de Cuba, who lost five of six games in one recent stretch. Slumping Villa Clara is in third place after losing ten of their first 12 games following the World Baseball Classic.
Yoandry Garlobo of Matanzas leads the Cuban league with a .405 batting average, just three percentage points ahead of Yorelvis Charles of Ciego de Avila. Isla de Juventud’s Wilber Perez has a Series-best ten wins, while Alfredo Unzue of Ciego de Avila leads with a 1.63 ERA in 72 innings.
