HAVANA, CIEGO DE AVILA IN DRIVER’S SEATS IN CUBA

With the Cuban National Series regular season winding down, two teams appear to be cruising to first place finishes in their respective divisions.

La Habana is 49-26 in the Occidental Division, good for a five-game lead over 44-31 Pinar del Rio and a 13-game bulge over 36-39 Isla de La Juventud. Things are a little more competitive in the Oriental Division, although 53-22 Ciego de Avila is six games up on 47-28 Santiago de Cuba. Villa Clara is right behind Santiago at 46-29 after starting the season on fire.

Yorelvis Charles of Ciego de Avila leads Cuban batters with a .404 average, while Yoandry Garlobo of Matanzas is second at .395.
