LIONS CLINCH FIRST HALF CPBL TITLE

Mickey Callaway pitched five shutout innings of four-hit ball and Dai-chi Kuo cranked a long three-run homer to lift the Uni-President Lions to a 10-7 win over the Brother Elephants last Sunday to clinch the first half championship in Taiwan’s Chinese Professional Baseball League.

The 34-year-old Callaway, who has pitched in the major leagues for Tampa Bay, Anaheim and Texas, held the Elephants in check while his teammates built a 10-0 lead, including a six-run outburst in the fourth inning. Also last Sunday, the La New Bears lost a 13-5 contest to the Sinon Bulls as starter Shoda Itsuki allowed two runs over six innings for Sinon.
